Artist Bio
Maria “Masha” Soboleva is a mixed media artist currently based in Maryland working as a lead instructor at a painting studio in Gaithersburg.
Artist Statement
Soboleva’s artistic practice encompasses cyanotype print making, painting, and airbrushing. She makes figurative and symbolic work that considers the contradictory relationships between the conscious and subconscious mind, dreams and reality, and the all-encompassing universe versus the individual human experience. Soboleva’s projects often contain layers of visuals and have small hidden images amongst the larger puzzle pieces.
The process of creating cyanotype prints with recycled materials parallels Soboleva’s imagery of capturing fading memories and dreams. Incorporating both her American and Russian heritage, her work thrives on being deeply personal and vulnerable.
